Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KKCCCI) was incorporated in August 1911, it was known as “Jesselton Chinese Chamber of Commerce” then.
According to the record, our Chamber has only about 50 members in the early years. However, the number of members has steadily increased to above one thousand in the register now.
With the aim of unifying the business sectors in Kota Kinabalu through the affiliation of the local trade association, our Chamber altered its name to “Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce” in 1975. Later to cope with the development of commerce and industry of the time, the Chamber altered its name again to “Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry”.
The objectives of the chamber are:
- To promote co-operation among the members for the advancement of commerce and industry, to assist in the development of the economics of the nation and to inculcate the duty of loyalty to the state and the nation.
- To safeguard the interest of the member, to disseminate information relating to commerce and industry; to promote unity, goodwill and harmony among the ethnic groups.
- To play the role as a communicating bridge between the government and the business sector; to carry out activities beneficial to the people and help to bring about prosperity.
- To promote education and to propagate the Chinese culture.
- To promote the interests of the members, the Chamber may acquire, sell or lease any property, and to invest either solely or jointly in business.
- To manage Chinese cemeteries situated at Mile 2.5, Jalan Tuaran; Mile 5.5 Jalan Tuaran, Menggatal and other cemeteries that may be developed in future with the prior approval from the relevant authorities, and to carry out charity and welfare activities.
Although our Chamber is by itself, as the name reflects, an organization that be longs to the local bosiness sectors, it also play an important role in promoting Chinese education and Chinese culture. There are now six schools under management of the Chamber, they are: SRJK Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Chung Hwa Likas, SJK (C) Hwa Shiong Putatan, Tadika Chung Hwa Likas, Tadika Hwa Shiong Putatan, Tadika Chung Hwa Jalan Penampang. Other than that, we also jointly manage KK High School with the United Chinese Community Associations of Kota Kinabalu and the KK High School Alumni.
Realizing the importance of leading the Chinese community towards the development of commerce and industry in this modern society, our Chamber put in an effort to promote business activities in KK through the setting up of various working committees within the Chamber itself.
In order to carry out activities effectively and systematically, we amended our constitution again in 2005, whereby the following 7 sub-committees are directly put under the charge of the 7 Vice-Presidents: The Commerce and Industry Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters concerning trading, manufacturing and other business related to commerce and industry. The Tourism and Technology Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters concerning tourism, technology and public works. The Primary Commodities Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters concerning primary commodities. The Welfare Sub-Committee is responsible to manage the affairs of the Chamber’s chinese cemeteries and to deal with welfare works. The Culture and Education Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters relating to culture and education. The Kindergarten Education Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters relating to kindergarten education. The Public Relations, Sports and Entertainment Sub-Committee is responsible to organize sports, entertainments and celebrations activities, to liaise with government departments, to entertain visitors and to recruit new members. The General Affairs Sub-Committee is responsible to deal with matters relating to open tenders and property management.
